MEDIA CONTACT: John De Oliveira, (512) 342-4000

Cycorp CEO Doug Lenat announces The 2006 Cyc Prize Competition, annual awards for publications and proposals involving OpenCyc and/or ResearchCyc. Winners will be announced March 7, 2006.

Begun in 1984 by Dr. Lenat, a former Stanford professor and MCC principal scientist, Cyc is a huge knowledge base of assertions about the everyday world, expressed in a logical formalism so machines can easily perform automatic deduction on them. OpenCyc is the open source version of the Cyc technology, including its ontology of terms and taxonomic information about each. ResearchCyc is a more inclusive version of the technology available at no charge to both academia and industry for R&D purposes. See http://research.cyc.com.

The 2006 Cyc Prizes will be awarded in two categories:

(1) Best research paper involving OpenCyc or ResearchCyc.
Papers must have been submitted between February 22, 2005 and February 21, 2006 to a peer-reviewed journal or conference for publication.
(2) Best research proposal utilizing OpenCyc or ResearchCyc.
Research proposals should be 4-10 pages in length, and must be for new, original research or development.

Each prize will consist of a $2,500 cash award. Winners will also be considered for three-month research appointments to the Cycorp technical staff during the summer of 2006.

Authors of the winning paper and research proposal will present their works to Cycorp staff and guests during an award dinner and colloquium at the Cycorp offices on June 16, 2006. (The winners will receive reimbursement for travel to Austin for this presentation.)
All papers and proposals remain the property of their respective authors, however Cycorp reserves the non-exclusive right to pursue research suggested in the proposals.
Current Cycorp employees and their relatives are not eligible.

The deadline for submissions is February 21, 2006.

Submissions may be sent as e-mail attachments (PDF or Word documents only) to:
