The current code tries to represent a thread by a thread id, but the different platforms are inconsistent as to what type is used to represent a thread id and some of the threading calls on Windows require a threadid and a thread handle to function. All of this should be abstracted out by a system specific class implementation. The 4.0 code has a prototype of such an abstraction.
