When in the OmegaT configuration "Allow source equal to target" is off, it is not easy to insert an identical translation (source=target) in the TMX. However, when you set "Allow source equal to target" on, I am getting a lot of user faults because one click in a translation is sufficient to add it to the TMX. And it is a global setting for all projects.

In our projects, we often have hyperlinks as separate segments to be translated, but they often remain the same when the hyperlink is not-translation dependent.

My preferred approach would be to have an option in the Edit menu: Register identical translation with a shortcut key.

This would then be the way to work: No allow source equal target, unless you have pressed the shortcut key on the segment itself. In that case it is added.

  • With this option implemented, do we still need "allow source=target" ?

"allow source=target" lets us insert source in target with Shift+Ctrl+R and have OmegaT consider that the segment is translated. Instead of having a global setting for that, using a hardcoded "don't allow source=target" and using "Shift+Ctrl+R to insert the source and do a local "allow source=target" (in case all that's inserted is the source and nothing else) would remove one option and simplify the UI.

    What do you think ?

Once it is possible to insert with one key the original source as target and mark it as translated, I will probably never ever use that configurable option again.

  • Yes, I think we have to consider that if the user inserts Source in Target with Shift+Ctrl+R and leaves it there untouched, it means that the translator intends to have the source translated this way, so triggering the local "allow source=target" with Shift+Ctrl+R should be enough.

I can't see a use case where we'd need a global setting and a special shortcut since the translator would have to insert Source in Target before that special shortcut is used. So merging the 2 functions would remove the UI clutter and save on useless complexity.

Could we have feed back from the OmegaT logical thinking masters on that :) ?

  • Or maybe, the default global option should be an unchecked "Do not allow Source=Target" and with Shift+Ctrl+R the source is translated as the target.

And when the global setting is set to "Do not allow Source=Target", then Shift+Ctrl+R inserts Source in Target and locally allows source=target.

In your comments above, I'm not sure (you're talking about using Ctrl+Shift+R) you're considering that a (presumably) large number of users use "Insert source text" for untranslated segments. That's not an unusual settings: In Alchemy Catalyst and Passolo, for instance, that's the normal way of working.
So, these users never use Ctrl+Shift+R at alll.
If these people want to continue recording translation identical to source by pressing Enter, why should be remove that possibility?

We had that discussion privately with Alex: not having "Insert source text" is not acceptable. Not only it is standard in other software. When working between close language pairs, having to manually copy the source to the target each time your enter an untranslated segment would hamper productivity.

    Implemented in /trunk.

There is now an Edit menu entry: Register Identical Translation. The same entry exists also in the right-click popup.

When used, the translation is registered. All the rest continues to work as before (e.g., emptying a translation deletes it). You can even alternate between using Allow translation to be equal to source or not using it.
