Unable to reach Skychart application

  • Hello,
I think that this is the best astronomy app I've seen in relation to logging observations. I wish I'd knew of it before finding it 2 years ago. I've run the 0.7 version and then the current 0.8. I was excited about the extensions but couldn't get the skychart to work. When invited to comment on the 0.920 - Release Candidate 1, I couldn't wait to try it and see if the skychart worked this time. It didn't. Then I thought I should tell the people on the Forum. I don't know what to do to make this work. I'm running Windows XP Home and the skychart is Cartes du Ciel. I've looked in the logfile but don't understand how this can help me to get the skychart working. Can anyone help me with this please? The logfile appears below. Thank you. Jeff. Hunter, Sydney, Australia.

  • Some questions -
    1. Your version of CdC. Must be 3.x (most preferable - lates).
    2. CdC must be  started before(!) OM.
    3. Did you have firewalls (or so), which may block connections to 127.0.0.1:3292 ? May you check possibility of connection manually?

    G'day Jeff,

glad you like the application. :-)
I guess Igor is right. The Cartes du ciel integration works only with Cartes du Ciel version 3.x (http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/)
If that's what you've runnning (OM doesn't need to be started before CdC…at least I never faced issues…but CdC must be started…OM cannot startup CdC for you), then maybe some firewall is blocking the port, as Igor already outlined.

Would be great if you could tell us, whether any of the suggestions work.

    Best regards

    Dirk

  • Thank you for your help Igor and Dirk. I was running Cartes du Ciel ver 2.76 AND I didn't start Ciel, thinking that OM would do it automatically. I've tried an IP address as Igor suggests, 127:0:0:1 and a Port 3292 as source and as destination and started up a BETA version of Ciel (ver 3 beta 0.1.2). This didn't work for me. I will download the newest Ciel (skychart-3.0.1.6-1202-windows.exe) ASAP and try it next. I may not be able to finish testing before the weekend due to work commitments, but I will get back to you guys with what happened. Thanks again. Regards, Jeff.

  • Hi Dirk,

I checked this reference above to WORDPRESS (very good directions too, easy to understand) and looked at the settings on my computer for OM (0.820) AND CIEL (ver 3 beta 0.1.2). I was surprised to find them there already (I didn't put them there either). But my OM window looks different to yours, it has HCNGC listings for my NGC listings. I thought that this might make a difference, so I tried changing the observation, but OM won't accept targets as NGC, only HCNGC. Then I thought that CIEL might only find the NGC listings, so I looked up a DIFFERENT observation in OM. I selected the Messier catalogue in CIEL and right clicked a Messier object observation in OM. Next, I clicked on the SHOW IN SKYCHART link but unfortunately, my CPU went into "Hyperdrive" and locked up the system for 5 mins. I think that CIEL is getting HUNG-UP and was wondering about what Igor said in his post above about computer firewall's. My PREVIOUS posting was done WITH firewall settings and I did type in JUST NUMBERS without the ":" or "." as you suggested (it has little boxes you type in). However, when OM didn't activate the skychart, I removed the rule from my firewall. All of the testing I did today had NO RULE in the firewall AND it didn't ask me to allow any application to access the internet during the tests. I was wondering, does the firewall need to have a setting to run the Skychart in OM? I am using the Comodo Firewall and wonder what your thoughts might be on this suggestion?

Meanwhile, I'll download the newest version of CIEL and get ready to install it. By the way, what versions of OM and Ciel are you using Dirk?

I'm sure that I'll fix this, but I really do need your help. Thank you for all your time and support. Hopefully, it will help some others if they have had a similar problem.

    Talk with you again soon.

    Jeff.

    Hi Jeffm,

the HCNGC normally do cause no problem, as if they're not found by Ciel, OM tries to send the object by it's alias names to Ciel. And almost all HCNGC objects have their NGC names set as alias name. (BTW: The HCNGC catalog is removed in 0.920 and replaced by the revised NGC and IC catalogs by Dr. Wolfgang Steinicke)

Can you do me a favour? Edit the obs.bat file (in the Observation Manager install dir) in a text editor (like notepad).
The last line looks like this:
    start javaw -Djava.ext.dirs=./lib de.lehmannet.om.ui.navigation.ObservationManager %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
    Pls. change it to:
    start javaw -Djava.ext.dirs=./lib de.lehmannet.om.ui.navigation.ObservationManager debug %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
so add the word debug before the %1… stuff starts.
Then start OM and start Ciel and call the "Show in skychart" function. The OM log should now contain more informations on what's going on there. Pls. send me/post this log file…

    Thanks and regards

    Dirk

  • Hi Dirk,

I haven't changed any versions yet, still OM 0.820 and Ciel 3 beta 0.1.2. Next, I changed the obs.bat file by by inserting the word debug where you indicated and saved the file. I ran OM and then Ciel.

Initially, I selected (left clicked) and then right cicked on an early observation of M7 (This was in the main table/viewing area in the OM's centre. OM gave me the following message,

Positioning of Skychart only works for selected Objects or Observastions

Then I opened the Observations on the left hand drop down list, and selected the same observation of M7. Next I right clicked to the Skychart function and after a few minutes of high CPU activity (by the way, I was running the app PROCESS TAMER to avoid locking up the computer. This app told me that the CPU usage was being overused by cdc.exe). Next, Ciel closed itself. That's when I got the log file which appears below.

Maybe the problem is my version of Ciel and the new one will work? I hope this info is of use to you Dirk.

    Thanks again,

    Jeff.

    Hi Jeff,

thanks for the log. In deed we now know that the connection is not the problem. OM and CdC talk to each other…
It also shows that OM tells CdC to goto M7. However then it breaks (on OM side). I cannot imagine that this error on OM side, causes any problem to CdC, but anyhow. I'll create a more robust SkyChartExtension and send you a pre-Version.
(I'll put the link here into the forum, once I've done this)
However I also ask you to update to the latest CdC, maybe this solved somthing for us….

    Thanks and best regards

    Dirk

    Hi Jeff,

    as promised. Please download:
    http://observation.sourceforge.net/extSkychart_fixForJeff.ome
(maybe use right-click and "Save target…")
    And install this extension.
    (- Open OM
    - Menu: Extensions -> Install -> Select the above named ome file
    - Restart OM)

Maybe this fixes your problems. If not, pls. post again the log file (with debug mode activated)

    Sorry for any inconveniences…

    Dirk

  • Hi Dirk,

I was not able to try the new Ciel version yet, but I gave the extension a try. Followed above procedures to install Skychart remote control. First go at OM finding an object in the skychart, Ciel closed down as before. I thought I have a secong try, closed and reopened OM and Ciel. Ran Skychart on M7, then clicked on the taskbar for Ciel. Surprise, it was highly zoomed in, but it was on M7. When I looked at the log file it still looked like something might be occurring of interest to you (red writing). After I looked back, Ciel was using all the CPU again, and its window was white. I guess the graphics can't use the CPU to display the Ciel chart window anymore??? I will install the new version Ciel tomaorrow and give it a try. I'll let you know what happens too?

Thanks again for your help (no inconvenience at all),

    Jeff.

    HI Jeff,

ups I missed to send you a second file. I was already aware of the problem above, fixed it, but missed to send you the second file. I'll upload that file later and post the link here.

    Best regards

    Dirk

Btw: Which language setting do you use for CdC? (I assume english…!?)

    Hi Jeff,

    here's the link: http://observation.sourceforge.net/observation.jar
Just download and place into the /lib folder of your OM installation. Afterwards pls. try again…

  • Hi Dirk,

I tried the Ciel 3 ver 0.1.6 AND THE SKYCHART WORKED with the OM 0.082 version. Looks good and exciting to see this feature perform. I've had a totally unrelated problem with the computer and had to do a System Restore which automatically reverted my Ciel to the version 3.0.1.2 again, so I'll give your second file above a go tomorrow. You were correct about the language, I do use English in Ciel.

I'll let you know about the retry of the second file tomorrow.

    Thanks again,

    Jeff.

  • Hi Dirk,

Well I tried OM 0.082 with Ciel ver 3 beta 0.1.2 using the extra extension installed and the observation.jar file in the library folder of OM. It didn't work but gave a message, "FAILED TO MOVE TO SKYCHART. TARGET NOT FOUND OR NO POSITION DATA GIVEN". I'm sorry that I couldn't give you better news. However, the skychart DOES WORK when using the MOST RECENT version of Ciel ver 3 beta 0.1.6. I'm happy with that and would be content at this point. If you're like me though, you might want to keep on trying to fix it, but I'd suggest just recommending to use the newest version of Ciel with OM. Also, this might not even be necessary, as it might just be something with my Windows XP system, who knows? Perhaps its only me that has had this problem. The bottom line is this, I love your OM software and would use it regardless of the skychart feature. I'd like to say a big thank you to you for all your time in helping me with this issue as well as, putting this software together for us amateur astronomers to use. By the way, I thought that you might like to have a look at "Ice In Space", an Australian run, but international astronomy forum/review/buy-sell/knowledge/current event website. It has great articles and projects to do with all aspects of astronomy. It's a bit like Cloudy Nights website if that gives you a clearer idea. I thought that I could even tell the others that use the site (thousands are members) about your OM software but you would probably be able to do the explaining better than I could as I have no programming experience at all.

Well I guess this is goodbye, but I will still keep looking for your OM new releases and I will tell you of any things I notice if that can be of assistance to you. All the best now from Sydney Australia.

    Kind Regards,

    Jeff. Hunter

    Hi Jeff,

first thanks so much for all your effords! The changes I did in the code certainly will make OM more robust. Also that OM and CdC are now working for you is great news and I hope you enjoy it.
Pls. whenever you find other bugs/face issues, please drop me a note here so that I can fix it.

I know the Ice In Space site and I already posted new OM releases there (in the software forum) in the past. (I thought that's the way you heard about OM…)
I hope to release OM 0.920 quiet soon and will post an announcement into the Ice in Space forum again. Would be great if you could than reply to that post and tell the community your thoughts.

Best regards to the other side of the world :-)

    Dirk

  • Hi Dirk,

Just one last thing. I did hear of OM in Ice In Space Forum but in a string reference and a link that took me to the download site which wasn't on Ice In Space. I didn't know about OM releases on Ice In Space were in a software Forum. I will look that one up. I will look out for your new release of OM 0.920 and would be only to happy to tell of the good times I've had with BOTH the OM software and also, being able to give a small hand in some way to you. Your certainly most welcome for any thing I might of done but I feel it really is all your work and kindness that really deserves the mention here. You're also very welcoming of others helping you which makes it a pleasure to offer a hand. I'll look forward to the news of the release.

Once again, all the best to you and clear skies to us all for the OM records.

    Kind Regards,

    Jeff.
