Epipleural Series-Anatomical cluster that consists of the epipleurals. The epipleural series lies below the horizontal septum and is posteroventrally directed.
Definition ref 1: modified ZFIN:curator, Dictionary of Ichthyology http://www.briancoad.com/Dictionary/Introduction%20and%20A-F.htm
Comments: There are ossified epipleurals in certain ostariophysans. In many lower elopocephalan teleosts including ostariophysans the epipleural bones develop an anterodorsal branch so that they are forked proximally. Epipleural ribs may be associated with the anterior pleural ribs, e.g. in Perca or with the vertebra, e.g. in Gobiidae.
