abnormal placenta hemotrichorial membrane morphology
DEF: any structural anomaly of the three trophoblast cell layers found in rodent placentas between fetal blood vessels and maternal blood sinuses. The human placenta is hemomonochorial, as this membrane consists of a single layer of synctiotrophoblast at term. In mice maternal blood bathes a perforated layer of cytotrophoblast cells that overlay two layers of syncytiotrophoblast, thus the murine placenta is hemotrichorial. Maternal blood has direct access to the murine synctiotrophoblast layer I via fenestrations in the murine cytotrophoblast layer.
