I have an issue with NP++ v6.4.5 and file encryption tool EncFSWin v1.7.4 on my Win7pro32bit. With NP++ I can open only one text file at a time from mounted EncFS drives. With drag&drop or direct opening of another text file nothing happens (no new tab). Only when no other file from EncFS drive is opened in NP++, one (and only one) other file can be opened. However creating new files and saving them on EncFS drive is possible from NP++. All other files from non-EncFS drives are handled correctly.

I did a search for keyword EncFS in the this bug system, but did not find anything. Other editors like Jarte have no problem with opening multiple files from EncFS drive. I am not sure if this is a bug of NP++, but it looks like.

I just tested with the portable NP++ v6.4.4 and the problem does not occur. Apparently either a plugin issue with my installed NP++ or windows specific issue. Will continue to investigate and report.

  • This bug was introduced in 6.4 and fixed in 6.4.4. I am able to reproduce it in 6.4.3, but not in 6.4.4 nor in 6.4.5. The only difference between 6.4.4 and 6.4.5 is that a bug related to the "recent files" list in the File menu was fixed.

You say you can reproduce it in 6.4.5, but are you sure that's the version you're running? Press F1 to check.

The problem was due partly to EncFS and partly to Windows. Windows provides a way to get what is essentially a unique ID number for every file. However, not every file system implements this and Windows doesn't appear to provide any way to query a file system for its capabilities. When you try to get the unique ID for a file on an EncFS drive it always returns the same number no matter what the file is. The result was that if you had opened one file from an EncFS drive, Notepad++ would think you had opened ALL files on that drive.

Thanks for the fast reply and background information. You are right I was using not the recent version v6.4.5. This because the automatic update of NP++ resulted only in v6.4.3. Why this? This happened for me on two machines Win7pro32bit and Win7home64bit. Why is NP++ not upgrading to the most recent version? A download of v6.4.5 and manual installation solved the issue. Bug fixed! Thank you!

Confusing, that the following URL is directing to v5.9:
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/files/latest/download?source=directory
    with download file: npp.5.9.Installer.exe

P.S.: I changed from BoxCryptor to EncFSwin, because EncFS is really free and has more options. I am happy that the reported unstability of EncFSwin is not affecting NP++.

  • If the autoupdater takes the absolute latest release a lot of users might end up with buggy versions which have to be autoupdated again (this happened this time around, with 6.4.5 being released a day after 6.4.4 to fix a serious regression). At least that's the only reason I can think of.
