When I compare two text files with Notepad++ 5.8.2 Compare Plugin 1.5.6.1 on my Windows 7 64-bit system, the result is a repeated flashing screen.

The only way out is to force a system shutdown via Ctrl-Alt-Del. Even this is not easy, if you have any unsaved files.

It would seem that the fact my system is the 64-bit version of Windows 7 may be the significant circumstance here.

The symptom does not occur on the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

This is happening for me as well. I've tried a document that is 100 lines long and the compare displays fine. Comparing two documents with 10000 rows causes the blackout/flickering. I've the same compare on two different laptops with Windows 7 64 bit. I have a monitor connected to one of the laptops and it blacked out and flickered as well. Closing the comparison navigation bar allows display to work. Opening the nav bar again causes the blackout flickering. Thank you for this wonderful program!

I also figured out that you can press windows-d to minimize all the windows. It takes a bit till the windows minimize but avoids the shutdown. I also figured out that with 10000 line docs displaying the nav bar without even running the compare triggers the symptom.

I too am having this problem 18000+ lines.
ctrl+f4 closes notepad++ and screen goes back to normal
screen looks as if it is constantly changing resolutions or like the old CRT's switching on/off

  • Also happening to me, Windows7 32bit edition.
After some time it stops and stabilises, but takes quite some time.
Looks as if it was trying to change resolution or something like that?

If you have UAC enabled in Windows 7 and Vista, run N++ with Admin privileges, i.e. Right click on Notepad++ icon and click on Run As Administrator. This fixed the issue for me.

Just to assure the issue is triggered by the nav bar, identical files doesn't trigger it no matter how much the size.

It only occurs when the nav bar draws over precisely 5940 lines (including all difference markers, identical lines are counted as one), compare buffer doesn't matter as I tried to put some random lines over 60,000 characters. I guess it has something to do with the drawing buffer inside the nav bar.

    And per my experience,
    - Running as Administrator doesn't fix the problem.
    - If you want the screen back, instead of Alt + F4, you could press Ctrl + Alt + D to turn the plugin off.
    - Screen flickering is due to your display driver constantly trying to recover by resetting the master screen buffer, but the nav bar just keep faulting its own buffer again and again...

Please set this issue to a higher priority as files with over 10,000 lines are very common in developments. This issue just renders the whole plugin unusable in 64bit systems.

I'm having this problem as well on a laptop 1280x800. Constant black flickering, it looks like the graphics card display is trying to adjust to a different resolution or something. Eventually it fails and the navbar is blank. I have a desktop 1920x1080 that is fine though and can handle it.

Attached is an example of two files that flashed the screen on my laptop when I compared them in Notepad++.

Did anyone ever look into this? I still am getting the flicker and the Nav Bar doesn't work.

i have also added this bug to the actual compare bug section, it might be more official place for it and might get recognized. its here
    https://sourceforge.net/p/npp-compare/bugs/18/

also if you shut off the navigation bar check mark it seems to work without the screen flicker.

Yes the Nav Bar seems to be the culprit but turning it off is not an option.
I rely on the nav bar.

I only have this problem on my laptop running a IntelHD-GPU.
The driver (or whatever, I cannot find an error log anywhere) seems to be reset repeatedly, and I only noticed that because the tray-icon of the "Intel Graphics Properties"-program kept reappearing.

When disabling Aero or switching to "Windows Basic"-theme, the flickering does not happen.

It's not happening on my desktop with a nvidia-GPU.

  • I have the same problem using Notepad++ v.5.9.4 using Compare Plugin 1.5.6 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine with a Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 chip (Dell Inspiron E6400 series). Usually compare works just fine, sometimes it flickers once and in rare cases it goes completely haywhire and I need to pull the battery from my laptop to recover.
