It would be nice if net-snmp supported an initial version of the Integrated Security Model for SNMP. It looks promising as an alternative to SNMPv3 USM.

    note that a university implemented isms for net-snmp, but didn't give the patch back to us and I believe they released as GPL too (which doesn't mix with our more open license). You might be able to find the patch with some googling though if you don't mind GPL code.
