I did a compile with
gcc -Wall -W -pedantic
and tried to remove all bogus warnings not caused by
prototyped functions. The result compiles cleanly,
shows no signs off decay and shows only the two known
warnings with
gcc -Wall -pedantic

I left one out, because there is a matching line commented:
cc -g -O2 -W -Wall -pedantic -I/usr/X11R6/include
-DUSE_DIRENT -DUSE_LPR_PRINT_CMD -c -o regularExp.o
regularExp.c
regularExp.c: In function `ExecRE':
regularExp.c:2655: warning: unused parameter
`cross_regex_backref'

Please check and commit.

It looks all ok. I left the unused parameter in ExecRE()
because, some day, someone may solve the problem why the
    code was commented out.
    Committed to CVS. Thanks.
