What prove do you have that 2.3.1 is good? I tried it some weeks ago on x86-32 ubuntu (self compiled) and I got strange 'X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)' errors. So I disabled 2.3.1 again.
I will try it now on x86-64 ubuntu.

You might try X Error patch to see what's the reason for these errors. Been using 2.3.1 for several weeks on x86 and x86-64 systems. It's certainly not bad, nor perfect. Anyway, this patch is just proposal.
