When a macro is performing tasks in the
background, it is often desirable to provide
unobtrusive feedback, so dialog() is not an
option. It would be very handy to have a macro
function that writes a short message to the
In fact, Nedit already does this internally: if a
macro is running for some time it will display the
message "Macro command in progress -- Press
Ctrl+. to Cancel" on the statistics line. It would be
a useful addition to the macro language to make
this feature available to user macros as well.
The idea is that a message posted by a macro

fixed period of time (unless replaced by a newer
message) after which the statistics line would
go back to its regular mode.
