I'm currently trying to build NEdit 5.5 on an SGI Altix
    ("uname -a" gives
Linux pisgah 2.4.21-sgi300rp04072711_10087 #1 SMP Tue Jul 27
    11:53:22 PDT 2004 ia64 ia64 ia64 GNU/Linux), and think I see the
reason for this problem -- but I don't have the resources to
    fix it:

    From current directory "/home/users/coats/Apps/nedit-5.5", when
I attempt a "make" for "Microline" -- "(cd Microline; make)"
    I get the
    messages
../../../config/rules.mk: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target
    `../../../config/rules.mk'. Stop.

That seems to be referring to a "config" directory one level
below the "nedit-5.5" directory (and to a "rules.mk" file in
    it). And moreover
these files don't seem to be anywhere in the directory sub-tree:
"find . -name rules.mk" and "find . -name config" both
    return empty.

It is not necessary to cd into the Microline directory.
Typing "make" at the nedit directory should be sufficient.
The toplevel makefile descends into the Microline/Xml
directory and does the compiling there.
The Makefile and Makefile.in in the Microline directory are
not used by us and should be removed.

Thorsten, can you be a bit less cryptic and explain what
    your problem is?

I can't answer for Thrsten, but that does it for me.

    Thanks! -- Carlie

I don't it's cryptic. This is not about compiling NEdit (which
works on most supported platforms) but about compiling
the library. This cannot be done currently, with the error
    reported by Carlie below.

To repeat, cd into the library's directory and enter 'make'.

I've added a working Makefile for Microline (also for Xlt)
    to CVS.
