Primary problem is that both versions create or desire
a ".nedit" file(same as dir in *nix) in the home
directory. If you could name the new directory for 5.4
".NEdit" , that problem would be resolved.

In addition, the 5.4 rc file is somewhat incompatible
with 5.3 rc but you probably knew that...

Unfortunately, 5.4 is not yet at a daily usable stage
and i need 5.3 to work. I'd like to be able to use
both, ...well, use one and test the other. :)

The name of the directory that 5.4 uses is configurable.
    You can try:
    setenv NEDIT_HOME ~/.NEdit
    or
    export NEDIT_HOME=${HOME}/.NEdit

    and restart NEdit.

NEdit configuration files are never backwards compatible, so
you'll need to keep two copies as long as you use both versions.

You can use both if you set NEDIT_HOME to .neditdir for
    instance:
    setenv NEDIT_HOME ~/.neditdir # with csh

Then 5.3 will use the file in your homedir and 5.4 the file
    in ~/.neditdir.

Anyway, IMO, 5.4RC1 is ready for daily use.
Releasing 5.4 is just a question of.... Of what?

Thanks Frank and edg! - I will try setting the environment
    variable as a solution.

You can use both at the same time, as long as you don't save any settings when in 5.4. 5.4 will then continue to import the old settings. Or, use the two-profile solution described above.
