I've had the same problem on my Acer TM 290 cxi. My error was to use the drivers installed on my windows partition.
I had console locking problems like yours and "UNIMPLEMENTED" messages in my dmesg. (could still ctrl+alt+del though).
Someone wrote he resolved his problems by downloading the latest drivers on the computer manufacturer site (in my case ACER).
Everything now runs fine.
This might give you a clue, but I don't guarantee it'll work for you.
