Hi. I just bought Netgear's combo MR814 wireless router and MA521 (RTL8180)
wireless PCMCIA card. I've tried the various Linux drivers from Realtek's
site on Slackware 9.1, but nothing at all ever got through, so I'm trying
ndiswrapper now and am getting similar results:
Using either the Win2k or WinXP drivers from Realtek's site, whenever I
modprobe ndiswrapper, the results seem random. Half the time I'll get a
wlan0 interface, and half the time there will be no interface, plus a logged
error: "__alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed". If I loop through rmmod
ndiswrapper; modprobe ndiswrapper; dmesg | tail, I will eventually get a
Once I do get an interface, I'm unable to do anything with it. I've disabled
WEP and allowed SSID broadcasting on the router. "iwconfig wlan0 mode
Managed" doesn't complain.. neither does "iwconfig wlan0 essid NETGEAR", but
a subsequent iwconfig shows the essid to still be blank. "iwlist wlan0 scan"
finds nothing, iwspy says wlan0 doesn't support scanning, "ifconfig wlan0
192.168.0.33" followed by either ping 192.168.0.7 (MR814 router) or tcpdump
return nothing... I've been googling and reading forums/mailing lists for
days, but haven't come up with anything else I can try.
I've rebuilt ndiswrapper with DEBUG and posted the relevent logs at
http://transamrit.net/files/netgear/ . Also, the laptop (Omni) is an old HP
OmniBook 2000CS (P133) running Slackware 9.1, with slackware-current's 2.4.25
kernel and modules. The box used to build everything for Omni (VeeAte) is an
XP1600+ running slackware-current with a custom 2.6.2. VeeAte has unpatched
2.4.25 source (configured with Omni's config), which I pointed the Makefile
to by adjusting KVER and KSRC.
I've included all info that I can think of, as it's getting near the time when
I'll have to decide if I cut out the UPC code and send in for the rebate, or
consider this project a loss and return the whole thing.
Thanks for any help,
