I am using the daily SVN builds on a Freerunner and have been seeing
spurious straight roads at various angles across the screen for the last
few days. Is anyone else seeing this?
Also, it seems that the bridge or layer tags are not honoured.
ATM, the text in the ETA and turn information boxes are too small to read.
How can I make this bigger? I am using the internal GUI if that makes a

Are they light blue?
Navit renders untagged and mis-tagged lines light blue.
To check, open the affected area
in JOSM or some other OSM editing tool. If there is something
there, then that explains it. You can also right-click such lines in
navit, they probably show up as "street_unkn"
Navit will show unfinished works as well as bugs. This can be
disabled. Go into the navit.xml file, and change rendering for
street_unkn. If nothing is rendered for this type, then nothing shows
on the map.

Correct. Navit has no support for most of the tags, so they
are simply discarded.
Current navit _can_ support layers, but the price of that
will be many more road types. You'd have to re-create all the
rendered types (roads & areas) for each layer.
I.e. residential road layer 1, residential road layer 2, and so on.
That is 11 times as many road types as navit has now. This part could be
Similiar for bridges - double all the road types so that
we get residential+residential bridge, motorway+motorway bridge,
and so on.
The better alternative is to add support for more tags than "name".
That is more complicated to do though.
