Send REFERER header

I am curious if there is any way for the player to send
back to the server the referer header of the page in
which it is embedded. Right now the player always sends
the server a blank referer header. Having this feature
would allow more thorough url/file protection, by
allowing the HTTP server to know from where the file
request comes (so server admins can configure their
.htaccess or whatever properly to ignore blank or
incorrect referer tags i.e. prevent hotlinking.) I did
some research and it seems like Flash may simply not be
able to do this, but I thought I would ask anyway.

It depends on what browser you are using. See this link:
http://groups.google.com/group/macromedia.flash/browse_thread/thread/f2c8529ee855f0d4/b84fb39a201545f3?lnk=st&q=flash+doesn%27t+send+http_referer&rnum=1&hl=en#b84fb39a201545f3
In my testing Firefox 1.5.0.8 + Flash 9 *doesn't* send a referer. IE 6 + Flash 9 *does* send a referer. Hence hotlink protection can't work reliably with Flash.
