On first start it says cp/ln codecs.conf from
mplayer to ~/.mplayerxp/codecs.conf.
In my case that statement was wrong - I had to
delete the given file in ~/.mplayerxp
Now it works fine.
Mankdrake 8.2/i386 w/mplayer installed.

You really should use codecs.conf from MplayerXP
package but not from mplayer.
