Hi list members, I'm getting the same error as Christoph by playing internet streams with mplayerplug-in. I have tried version 1.0-pre8 and the latest CVS version of Mplayer and version 3.25 and the CVS version of Mplayerplug-in. But all versions give the same error. On my notebook (gentoo linux) is Mplayerplug-in working great, but when I run a internet stream on my simple 1 Ghz, 512MB RAM, 8MB video memory computer (also gentoo linux) Mplayerplug-in doesn't work. The video output source X11 is working fine, but when I use Xvideo I get a signal 8 in module decode_video. (OpenGL isn't working on the machine) Mplayer from the console with Xvideo output and the same URL is working too. I think it has something to do with a slow starting Mplayer and the calculation of the players screen size. This because I figure out the following things: If I use a very small cache size the stream play sometimes (the other times I get the same error), but when I use a large cache (2000k) mplayerplug-in will crash always. If I press the fullscreen button after the first crash, the stream starts playing fullscreen the next connect try. Does any one has a solution for this problem? But why does it works well when I open mplayerplug-in fullscreen mode? And mplayer from the console has no problem at all. The link works also on my notebook. Some questions: Does mplayer wait before playing, when mplayerplug-in resizes the player window to the size of me movie? Can I give the movie frame of mplayerplug-in a static size so mplayer can stream directly to the frame? Are there other explanations of this error then not enough video memory? BTW, when the x11 vo is used mplayer is given the -zoom option so that when the fullscreen option is used, the video is zoomed up. That is why x11 works well in fullscreen mode. I think this answers both questions: mplayer is passed in the size of the embedded window to play in. The is set by the height and width tags of the embed statement in the HTML. Another explanation might be if you are using a laptop with an external monitor. I know on the machine I have with an ATI card that XV can only be used on one display (you set it the xorg.conf file). So with my laptop I could have XV output on the internal or external display but not both. It's a very nasty problem. When I use X11: The stream works in normal and fullscreen mode but the screen is shocking. When I use XV: The stream crash in normal mode (the signal 8 in module decode_video error) If I press the fullscreen button during buffering the player starts playing perfectly in fullscreen mode. And when I return during playing to the normal mode the video keeps streaming in the mplayerplug-in frame. So it can work after switching between fullscreen and normal mode. But what is the difference? With the resizing of mplayerplug-in I mean the following action: [debug log] READ: Movie-Aspect is niet gedefinieerd - geen voorscalering toegepast. It isn't a laptop, just a normal pc with 1 monitor. It is a development version of a simple internet computer. There are 800 live machines (who are running now a old version of mplayer and mplayerplug-in with the X11 video output). But for optimal playing it's very nice to get the Xvideo output working. I would guess that mplayer is falling back to x11 mode in this case. But for optimal playing it's > very nice to get the Xvideo output working. > XV is nice, but is not REQUIRED. Sure you will get a little bit better image quality and less tearing, but that is due to the speed of your video card. Actually on all my machines I generally run in X11 or GL modes (I know you can't do that). If you are running at 1024x768 (just a guess) in 24bit color (if you are doing video I would expect nothing less). You are using 2.3-3.1MB of video ram for the screen, and due to the design of X, usually that value is doubled or tripled, so there will be very little memory left for a fullscreen XV buffer. 800x600 would probably be the max rez that you could use for 24bit color and full screen xv. There is really not much mplayerplug-in can do for the situation. As all the plugin does is to setup the window and launch mplayer.
