SUCCESS! The problem was procedural. If you are interested, read on. I am just
thrilled that it's all over. And it was a good idea to get rid of all the old
Mplayer and Mplayerplug-in files and start from scratch.

My heartfelt gratitude for your help.
Here is what happened. When I copied the contents from the Blue folder
to /.mplayer/Skin/Blue and to /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skin/Blue, I made the
mistake of copying them using cp *.* in the CONSOLE. In the process, I failed
to copy the "icons" directory as well as the "skin" file. Not realizing this,
I naturally kept repeating my mistake over and over. When you pointed out the
absence of the "skin" file, I started searching for it until I finally
realized that I had not copied it to its rightful place.
It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. But I am sure glad this
hours-long ordeal is over. As soon as I corrected the error, Mplayer launched
