I'm currently starting to write some code to detect motion in an MPEG
stream. My plan is to parse the stream sufficiently to extract the
motion vectors, but not to do the inverse DCT that would actually get
the pixel data. I have been led to believe that looking at the
magnitude of the motion vectors gives a good motion hint, e.g. to
trigger a recording, without the computational effort that would be
needed to totally decode the stream and then use "motion".
This is, of course, off-topic for this list. But I'd thought I'd
mention it here in case any readers are interested and could help out,
or can point me to some existing code that already does this, or would
like to try to persuade me that the idea is doomed.
