Dear BobThanks, indeed I read your post but I believe I need ffmpeg (I need motion to record a 60 seconds video after triggering an alarm).

To compile motion-3.2.12.tar.gz with ffmpeg support on openSUSE 11.4 using the
ffmpeg RPMs from Packman, all you need to avoid the compilation error is to
install the libffmpeg_oldabi-devel RPM.
