I was looking at doing that, but I think I'll give extpipe a shot.  I
still prefer ffmpeg (command line), so I'll just replace the mpeg4
source in my script with STDIN.

With extpipe you are free to use whatever encoder you wish. The reason I use mencoder is because it has video filters allowing me to remove most of the noise from the camera which allows significant improvements in compression.
