Isn't that what logrotate is for? Why should modsecurity reinvent that

Subject: [mod-security-users] Log file handling and compression support
We use Modsecurity for several months. The log files are 12GB and
know it is possible to split by day/week.
However, is there a GZ compression option planned? Or alternatively some
settings to configure the logs, like keep for x weeks and then delete?

You are right, to an extent. I don't believe these features belong to
ModSecurity either. However, I do believe the logs should be centrally
stored somewhere where there are facilities that will help you
maintain them, inspect them, and so on.
