The Makefile has a debug option, which is normally commented out.
Uncommenting it produces debugging output, including a test for memory leaks.
Some routines (such as the packet expiring) are run only once a day. To debug
them, you have to edit or delete time.log, the third number of which is the
time of the last daily routine run.
Sometimes you need to figure out what Mix is doing with a particular type of
file in the pool. To do this:
1. Stop mail delivery (fetchmail -q in my setup).
2. Run mix in a debugger, and stop when it has picked the random messages and
renamed them to s*.
3. Manually rename the file you need to watch.
4. Resume Mix and watch it run.
