Okay, I could not resist the name change to the subject.
But, seriously, with the use of the RoboSapien as a base you could have a cheap walking platform for $99, and they've designed the robot to easily be hackable.

I got one of these a few months ago. I hacked it to run via an external
power supply and external sound source. Then I tethered it to the top of a
book shelf (so it wouldn't walk off), and enabled
mh/code/robot_robosapien.pl so that all my misterhouse speech directed to
that room now goes through it. While speaking, it randomly moves its arms
and upper body, controled via an xAP connected IR RedRat interface.
I have some pictures and a movie here:
It makes for a fun mh mouthpiece, but I don't think it would be a very good
base for a roving platform like Kirk is looking for. It moves slowly, even
slower on carpet.
