Mike, Yes I have a very extended configuration. I use RF (coaxial) extension because the opportunity presented itself in the form of a built in = cable. Technically either way would work - long serial, but then you have to = have power there as well or make a special cable to carry the power along = with the serial link - and then find someplace to put it all out of sight. Here is what I have and I'm very happy with it. My mrhouse is running on a UPS and sitting next to the main breaker = panel, and a wiring collection point, in the basement corner of my house. The = house is two story, three if you count the finished basement, and is in the = 4000+ sq ft range including the finished basement. I have good reception out = to around 150 ft in my back yard - through brick and wood walls. The W800RF32A is connected through a USB/serial adaptor using the = supplied cable to a linux based server. The W800RF32A power adaptor is connected = into the UPS. The RF connector on the W800RF32A is patched onto standard = cable TV internal distribution coaxial cable CATV FT4. The cable runs through existing construction at least 65 feet but likely around 110 ft going = around corners etc - to a bedroom on the second floor. There I put a 90 right = angle connector onto the cable tv outlet and connected the whip antenna that = came with the W800RF32A oriented vertically. It is all behind a dresser. I have several DS10A, small keychain remotes, wall pad (4 button) transmitters, motion detector. Everything works well - with the = exception of one of the wall pad transmitters - it was marginal before - and the W800RF32A just totally ignores it. Overall mrhouse performance goes way up because of the W800RF32A = reception, but also because the X10 protocol collision are reduced since there is a separate path for incoming signals RF->W800RF32A->Computer from outgoing signals Computer->CM17->Device, and the incoming path is about 100 times faster than RF->X10 on the powerline. Good Luck. Jim -----Original Message----- From: mis...@li... [mailto:mis...@li...] On Behalf Of = Michael W. Oliver Sent: April 6, 2006 9:46 AM To: mis...@li... Subject: [mh] extension from W800RF32A to MH PC Hi folks, I am about to bite the bullet and pick up a W800RF32A to (hopefully) = solve my issues with wireless performance. Due to the location of my MH PC, I need to know if anyone here has successfully used a W800RF32A an = extended distance from the MH PC, like around 15 meters? If so, how did you = extend that distance? Long coax or long serial or split the difference? Did = you have any reliability issues? Thanks guys, appreciate the help. --=20 Mike Oliver, KI4OFU [see complete headers for contact information] |
