It is a full hardware controller modem (ie: no software DSP stuff like WinModems) and so that makes it Linux compatible. Seems to work well. It was the only hardware modem I could find commonly so I really didn't have much choice. As far as cost, it wasn't cheap by my standards (I paid $79 CDN, approx $49 US). My code is all Perl, based on the CPAN Ivrs module. I've ended up doing a major rewrite of the module to fully support the USR modems, and other features I needed. I'm making my final changes now and hope to submit them back to the author soon. Don't know how long before he'll update the module though. I haven't used vgetty so I don't have any advice there.
