minidlna just notified me about the number of inotify watches nearly being exhausted. As I recently found that I can use fanotify to monitor activity in (a given subtree of) my filesystem, I'd love to see this put to use in minidlna. I wrote up some details in http://stackoverflow.com/a/13389235/1468366 which might serve as a starting point. This approach will only detect files created on the local computer, so it won't help those using CIFS mounts and the like, but it should work better than inotify in many cases.
