    It's my first try with minidlna and i have some problems using it.

    The minidlna server can be found using windows, but not on my Samsung TV.
    Under windows, i can see both mediafiles (two of the blender demo movies), but i can't play them.

    Here are the config and debug log:

    minidlna.conf:

    _
    # port for HTTP (descriptions, SOAP, media transfer) traffic
    port=80

    # network interfaces to serve, comma delimited
    network_interface=eth0

    # set this to the directory you want scanned.
    # * if have multiple directories, you can have multiple media_dir= lines
    # * if you want to restrict a media_dir to a specific content type, you
    #   can prepend the type, followed by a comma, to the directory:
    #   + "A" for audio  (eg. media_dir=A,/home/jmaggard/Music)
    #   + "V" for video  (eg. media_dir=V,/home/jmaggard/Videos)
    #   + "P" for images (eg. media_dir=P,/home/jmaggard/Pictures)
    media_dir=V,/media/demo

    # set this if you want to customize the name that shows up on your clients
    friendly_name=MiniDLNA

    # set this if you would like to specify the directory where you want MiniDLNA to store its database and album art cache
    #db_dir=/var/cache/minidlna

    # set this if you would like to specify the directory where you want MiniDLNA to store its log file
    #log_dir=/var/log

    # this should be a list of file names to check for when searching for album art
    # note: names should be delimited with a forward slash ("/")
    album_art_names=Cover.jpg/cover.jpg/AlbumArtSmall.jpg/albumartsmall.jpg/AlbumArt.jpg/albumart.jpg/Album.jpg/album.jpg/Folder.jpg/folder.jpg/Thumb.jpg/thumb.jpg

    # set this to no to disable inotify monitoring to automatically discover new files
    # note: the default is yes
    inotify=yes

    # set this to yes to enable support for streaming .jpg and .mp3 files to a TiVo supporting HMO
    enable_tivo=no

    # set this to strictly adhere to DLNA standards.
    # * This will allow server-side downscaling of very large JPEG images,
    #   which may hurt JPEG serving performance on (at least) Sony DLNA products.
    strict_dlna=no

    # default presentation url is http address on port 80
    presentation_url=http://192.168.178.31:80

    # notify interval in seconds. default is 895 seconds.
    notify_interval=900

    # serial and model number the daemon will report to clients
    # in its XML description
    serial=12345678
    model_number=1

    # specify the path to the MiniSSDPd socket
    #minissdpdsocket=/var/run/minissdpd.sock

    # use different container as root of the tree
    # possible values:
    #   + "." - use standard container (this is the default)
    #   + "B" - "Browse Directory"
    #   + "M" - "Music"
    #   + "V" - "Video"
    #   + "P" - "Pictures"
    # if you specify "B" and client device is audio-only then "Music/Folders" will be used as root
    #root_container=.
    _

    After running minidlna with the -d option, i got this:

    _

    Hi,

      I haven't parsed your debug log but I see some things in the minidlna.conf that I suspect. I run minidlna on two boxes set up with these defaults.

    # port for HTTP (descriptions, SOAP, media transfer) traffic
    port=8200

    I don't override the default. Also, I use the default presentation_url

    # default presentation url is http address on port 80
    #presentation_url=http://www.mylan/index.php

    I'm not suggesting that everything is fine but I'd go back to the defaults for those two .conf entries unless I really really really know what I'm doing.  They work for my two servers.

    Thx. Good idea. I changed this two parts back and now i'm having the broken pipe error. Yes i tried to fix it with the informations within this "forum", but i doesn't work for me.

    I  wonder if your dlna to file system mapping is correct.
    2011/10/08 07:16:29] upnphttp.c:1780: info: Serving DetailID: 19   and then
    upnphttp.c:805: debug: HTTP REQUEST: GET /MediaItems/19.mkv HTTP/1.1

    Is this an SMB mounted drive that minidlna is supposed to serve up? I'm not saying this is the problem but it could be. Tell us a little more about what your minidlna server is and if the files are on separate systems, how and when they are mounted. No need for long debug logs until we know that.

    Ok, here is a short description of my test setup:

    VMWare 8.0.0 build-471780 (Windows), Ubuntu server 11.04 x64 with 1 GB RAM, 60 GB Harddisc and 1 CPU with 1 core. I can go much further with the virtual machine, but for tests… i think this should be enough.

    The ubuntu server installation is fully patched. I don't use smb and i can't find a file called 19.mkv on both machines (host/vm).

    Samba is not installed or running.

    What makes me wonder is, that i can't see this dlna server on something else than my windows machines. I tried to connect from two other machines and get the same result.

    A quick nmap scan reveals nothing unusual for a basic setup with ubuntu:

    22, tcp, open, ssh
    8200, TCP, open, trivnet1

    If everything breaks, i would have to go back to the old solution called: "put everything on an external disc and go down to the living room…"

    One possibility is firewall blocks the access from outside of the PC.
    In order to confirm, try to turn off firewall for only test.

    If this is the case, confirm  network setting of VMWare.
    Bridge mode is fine for this purpose.

    Ubuntu is a VM of Windows?  My set up is opposite, the box boots ubuntu (and minidlna) and I have a Windows VM (OracleBox)  for the few occasions I need Windows.  I probably can't help much but I will  mention that I once had VirtualBox in bridged mode and it caused more problems than it solved and is not so easy to undo or troubleshoot. Your mileage my vary.

    I missed one thing.

    I assumed Ubuntu on Windows using VMWare.
    If it is the case, and network setting is NAT, accessing from outside of the PC
    should not reach to Ubuntu, even if windows firewall is turned off.

    In my case, Ubuntu on Windows using VirtualBox, it works well with bridged mode network.
    I guess it is the same with VMWare.
