BTW on Win98 after some time I got lots of errors like: fork_copy: Resource temporarily unavailable I tried all the heap_chunk_in_mb, increasing virtual memory, etc. tricks and it still persisted with these errors. Finally when I switched back to MSYS 1.0.7-2 (686) they disappeared - this means that the latest 1.0.8 Snapshot has a memory leak somewhere. In fact, after some time, I could not even start MSYS itself with Windows 98 complaining about not enough memory available - even though the resource meter showed that more than 96% of system resources were free! BTW, I think that the heap_chunk_in_mb registry entry has no effect in MSYS, right?
