I am a new user of the compiler software. Downloaded the Get utility and installed successfully on a WIN XP SP3 machine, using default path C:\MinGW. Also installed the shell utility and created a shortcut to the .BAT file. Modified the FSTAB file and ran the /postinstall script. Updated the system PATH environment variable (tried both user and system) and ran several commands from both the MSYS shell and COMMAND.COM, e.g. "g++ --version", "gcc --version", "g++ HelloWorld.gxx -o HelloWorld". In each instance I received a system message relating to a disk error, or more precisely, three instances of the error. After dismissing the errors the command line completed, but I didn't know what caused the errors. I checked the archive and found posts from 2007 and one from 2013 suggesting that the source code for the compiler referenced drives on the development machine (not mine) that did not exist on my machine. There did not appear to be any resolution to this issue. I am writing to ask for confirmation that this is indeed the source of this problem and that it remains unresolved. If so I will abandon further effort along this path and work on a Linux machine instead. My objective is to learn C++ (I know VB and SQL); this fork seems to be taking me somewhat far afield.
