...which means you must distribute cygwin1.dll along with
your application; be sure to read, understand and comply
with its licensing requirements.

Windows is a very different platform from *nix.  If you
want to support it *natively*, then you simply cannot
avoid learning at least some of its peculiarities.  MinGW
gives you an excellent tool for the job, but it isn't a
`magic bullet', which obviates the need for learning
something about the platform differences.
