I would guess it's there to address a different problem: that a makefile or autotools file might use 'ln' where 'cp' would do almost as well. I suspect that's common for 'install' targets; letting them fail for lack of 'ln' would be bad. Providing 'ln' with 'cp' behavior isn't ideal, either, but it's a choice between two evils. But that's just my guess. |
