Didn't mean to get us off on this tangent.  Was primarily interested in best Perl fork for use with www.mingw.org's version of mingw (outside of msys).

Am at least hoping something positive will come from the way the thread is heading.  I just wanted to add that Open Watcom ( http://www.openwatcom.org/index.php/Main_Page ) also uses the win32 headers.  When that compiler went Open Source, they were unable to continue using the headers and MFC code they licensed from Microsoft.  I suggested, at the time, they cooperate with the mingw project and collaborate in using the same win32 header code.  I don't know what became of that suggestion, but I do know they're currently using win32 headers based on those used by mingw and they've made a few modifications of their own.  I'd like to suggest it again.  If there's anything we can do to combine efforts and resources, I feel it would be of benefit to both groups.

They totally got rid of the MinGW based ones and replaced it with their own for the 1.8 release ( http://openwatcom.org/index.php/C_Compilers_Release_Changes#List_of_changes_in_Open_Watcom_1.8 ).
