That should have been fixed by the 5.1.x series of the installer, I
assume (hope) your problem is related to the older 5.0.x series.

Ahh, good. I had just read something about 5.1.* after I posted this, and the problem is indeed with 5.0.*.

Is there much activity on the MinGW IRC channel? Where can it be found?

It's mostly idle now, anywhere from 5-10 users at a time. The channel is #mingw on irc.freenode.net :)
