Having finally (belatedly?) updated to 2.8, I find an unsuspected surprise:
On first install and inclusion of my personal local directories, they
appeared irremediably BELOW the MiKTeX instal directory (inside the settings
manager), which would have then made it impossible for me to override
certain packages, as I have been used to doing for many years now.
Not being an absolute novice, I closed everything and then reopened; I then
found that my personal local directories appeared irremediably ABOVE the
MiKTeX instal directory, which means I now risk (unwittingly) overriding
MiKTeX with anything and everything I might install personally.
Up to 2.7 it was not like this.
Is there a work around?
P.S. I haven't yet actually checked whether the overriding is as defined in
the wizard (it is odd that it switches from window to window); I already
wasted too much time battling mirror sites that kept returning empty headers
and blocking the upgrade progress.
