Thanks for the timely reply. Yes, I have Ruby (and also perl) installed. My MiKTeX version is 2.7 and it is updated very frequently (I'm maintaining a special TeX bundle called MiCTeX for Chinese users, so I have to keep my TeX installation very updated). The last update before today (April 22) was made yesterday (April 21), and the problem wasn't there before today.
Some more details on the problem: running texexec on the command line returns nothing. Running texexec file.tex returns nothing (no error messages, no log file). Running cont-en file.tex produces a correct dvi file (why dvi instead of pdf?).

I cannot check, but - what (which version of MikTeX & ConTeXt) did you
have installed before? Do you have ruby installed?
