The problem I had been having with generating pk fonts for Yap 2.9 seems
to have been cured by the following steps:
1. Uninstall MiKTeX 2.9 completely, including removing its
C:Documents and settings root directories.
3. Using Norton Utilities to clean the Windows XP Registry, and
4. Newly downloading the Basic MiKTex 2.9 installer and installing.
Now the pk files needed for cm fonts and amsfonts are generated without
error. (Even while invoking yap through WinEdt.)
Why I had been having the trouble is still unclear. But note that my
first attempt at installing 2.9, with the Complete Installation, had
aborted near the end (as I believe I reported earlier). Perhaps that
left some "junk" Windows Registry entry that only now has been eradicated?
