-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi! we are using WinXPprof clients on a Samba-Domain-Controller. About 1100 pupils a sharing 70 clients using roaming profiles. MiKTeX is installed into the share \\server\texmf, all other directories \\server\mytex This works for the installing admin (root). All other users get access denied. Linux and Samba rights are read, write and execute for \\server\mytex. Normal users can create files in \\server\mytex any hint? Can't users read \\server\texmf, or can't they write \\server\mytex? Or is the problem with the non-configurable user config and user data trees? You can find some documentation at http://docs.miktex.org/manual/setupwiz.html. The default location for generated data doesn't appear to be backed up to the LAN at logout. This doesn't sound like your problem though. -- Siep Kroonenberg |

I put everything under HKCU, even if it was originally under HKLM. For 2.4 this worked fine. For 2.5, the tricky bits are under HKCU\Software\miktex.org\MikTeX\2.5\Core. Registry entries such as the following seem to do the job: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\MikTeX.org\MiKTeX\2.5\Core] "Roots"="x:\\mymiktex;z:\\lan\\miktex" "Install"="z:\\lan\\miktex" "UserData"="x:\\mymiktex" "UserConfig"="x:\\mymiktex" Is seems to be necessary that UserConfig is an expandable registry string instead of a regular registry string. I am still working on the new MikTeX installation, so this isn't in production yet. -- Siep Kroonenberg |

Most of the stuff under c:\Documents and Settings\username gets copied to the network when you log out, only the Local Settings subdirectory doesn't. You can check that if you have full access to the Samba server. So you won't take your filename database along to another system if you log in elsewhere. On the other hand, for a per-computer installation the filename database is written to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MikTeX\2.5. I guess an unprivileged user cannot write to this location, and even if he could, then he still couldn't take his fndb to another machine. -- Siep Kroonenberg |

Of course, this means a small amount of duplication. More annoying is that people's fndb isn't updated automatically when something changes in the shared tree(s), but I can probably fix that with a script in their Programs\Startup menu. TeX Live keeps the fndb at the root of each tree, which saves a lot of headaches, and I wish that MikTeX did the same. I'll be away from email for the next week. -- Siep Kroonenberg |
