Is it possible to get the **real** Helvetica font embedded in the PDF file
you create using PDFLaTeX or dvipdfm?
I find that once I create the .dvi file, the only way to embed the real
Helvetica font into the PDF is to use dvipdf in Cygwin.

Cygwin doesn't embed the real Helvetica font - it embeds the URW clone. If
that is what you want MiKTeX to do, just set
to true in updmap.cfg. Read the instructions in texmf\web2c\updmap.cfg before
you edit it.
