I am now puzzled, and don't know how to proceed with
updating MiKTeX 2.6.
I have been using MiKTeX 2.6 beta 2 and beta 3 until Apr 20.
Learning that a considerable amount of updated files were
available on April 21, I started the update process using
MiKTeX Update Wizard. Of repositories I choose dante, and
installed first miktex-bin only, as adviced. However,
thereafter something weird occurred: Trying to continue the
updating process I obtained an error message
stating that the operation could not be completed, because
no file C:\Documents and Settings\Olli\Local Settings\
Application Data\MiKTeX2.6\miktex\config\uninst.log could be
found. And really, the directory in question consists of
mpm.ini and an update-2007-04-21...log file only.
Suspecting that there was something wrong with the April 20
version of miktex-bin I decided to postpone continuing the
updating process until the new files were available in
ftp.dante.de and returned yesterday (April 22). However,
with the same error message as result.
What to do? The next step was to remove all traces of MiKTeX
2.6. Control panel > Add and remove programs > MiKTeX 2.6
Beta 3 didn't succeed, as no .../uninst.log file could be found.
The next attempt to proceed was to use Registry First Aid to
completely remove all occurrences of MiKTeX or miktex, and
start from the scratch with basic-miktex-2.6-beta-3.exe.
Again, installation of the lightweight miktex system was
succesful; only that there is still no uninst.log file, and
consequently, continuing of the installing process was
Windows XP Service Pack 2. I have been using MiKTeX
succesfully for seven years, and consider it indispensable -
much better that the PCTeX and teTeX that I used
before that in 80's and 90's. All information that helps me
to understand how to proceed is welcome.

(quote modified by OJM)
Stubborn as I am, I tried to install MiKTeX 2.6 once more, this time not
restricting it for my own use only.
And this time the installation went trough without difficulties.
Apparently what is wrong with the installation programme is that it offers
either for for all users or for one's own use. Therefore:
*don't try to select the second alternative if you don't want to get into
The latter alternative should be removed!
