But why isn't it a problem with absolutely anyone else? Also it didn't always happen; I'd say it's been like this for less than a year. > Concerning package updating: First of all - try all (4) major CTAN > mirrors. If none of them is working I would guess proxy problem again... Well, the mirros are just fine (at least those I've tried) if I do the thing by hand, but the first thing the wizard wants to do is find www.miktex.org and it can't! I suppose I just have to resign myself to downloading by hand, or remembering to do everything from my office, but it is a pain! > Can you ping www.miktex.org / the CTAN ftp-servers? If so, you at least > have connection... Here's what I get: Pinging www.miktex.org [192.67.198.53] with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for 192.67.198.53: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms So, I suppose you're right. Now what? Is there a way to change the default time-out? > > P.S. I have gone through the FAQ etc. to no avail. > > Good that you have read the FAQ - to bad it didn't help :-) I ALWAYS, ALWAYS read the FAQ, the manual, the readme.txt, the mailing list ...! > ###################################################################### > # The FAQ doesn't cover too much so everybody should also try the # > # excellent MiKTeX search page - http://www.miktex.org/search.html # > # I can't say this often enough... # > ###################################################################### Well, right now I'm at home ... so the excellent MiKTeX search page is not reachable!
