Dear Ulrike, Thanks for your replies. 1. I've got a cmd.exe window opened where I can successfully compile my test case. I've launched texworks from that window by typing "texworks". In that texworks window, I get this error: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (MiKTeX 2.9 64-bit) entering extended mode (C:/Users/Sébastien/Dropbox/2013/miktex-bug/bug.tex LaTeX2e <2011/06/27> Babel <v3.8m> and hyphenation patterns for english, afrikaans, ancientgreek, ar abic, armenian, assamese, basque, bengali, bokmal, bulgarian, catalan, coptic, croatian, czech, danish, dutch, esperanto, estonian, farsi, finnish, french, ga lician, german, german-x-2012-05-30, greek, gujarati, hindi, hungarian, iceland ic, indonesian, interlingua, irish, italian, kannada, kurmanji, latin, latvian, lithuanian, malayalam, marathi, mongolian, mongolianlmc, monogreek, ngerman, n german-x-2012-05-30, nynorsk, oriya, panjabi, pinyin, polish, portuguese, roman ian, russian, sanskrit, serbian, slovak, slovenian, spanish, swedish, swissgerm an, tamil, telugu, turkish, turkmen, ukenglish, ukrainian, uppersorbian, usengl ishmax, welsh, loaded. So even if I start texworks from the command line where things otherwise work, texworks is still broken for me. 2. I've just run pdflatex on bug.tex (my test case) and it works from the command-line but not from TeXworks. Same behavior from latex and xelatex (works from command-line but not from TeXworks). 3. I discovered this problem a little while ago, on a months-old installation. I did reinstall yesterday because I was wondering if there was a problem with my installation. The problem was present before, and remains present now.
