When I compile the following example with a current miktex on win7 with the option --enable-pipes then
1. "pdflatex --enable-pipes test" works fine and add the date to the document
2. "xelatex --enable-pipes test" gives no error but no output either
3. "lualatex --enable-pipes test" gives no error that the option is unknown but gives an error while processing the document:

! I can't find file `|date /t'.
l.17 \input "|date /t"

1. looks like a bug to me, 3 is at least unexpected. Shouldn't lualatex complain about an unknown option if it doesn't understand pipes?

The test document:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\input "|date /t"
\end{document}
