#1985 \jobname replaces spaces with *s

If I have a LaTeX file with spaces in the file name, then \jobname will replace those spaces with s. This is not a problem for \openin or \openout (I'm guessing that the internal representation is s, or something like that), but something like \immediate\write18{del \jobname.aux} fails on Windows.
