#1039 setup: cab extraction error (system-dependent)

Nita Mukherji

I tried to install the Large package of MikTex 2.4 on my
new Dell Dimension 8300 running XP Prof SP1. I got the
following error message:

Extracting files from esvect.cab...

Error: The package information file

cannot be written.
Refreshing file name database...

Error: The file name database cannot be created.
Package installation didn't complete.

I have applied all the current critical updates and my
system appears to be virus free.

Previously, I had tried to install the Total package of
MikTex 2.4 on the same OS and got the same error on a
different .cab file.

Surprisingly, I could install MikTex 2.4 on the XP Prof SP1
at work without any problems.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Please, would you be so kind as to produce a debug log file
    with DebugView? See http://miktex.org/diag.html for
    instructions. Thanks.

A new version of the setup wizard will be available next
week. Chances are that it solves the problem.

I had the problem with the current version (2.4) - with the
Downloader-Installer. It worked, after I downloaded the
    whole pack (300+ MB) first.
