On the linux distib of mesa that comes with redhat I just removed /usr/X11R6/include/GL/glut.h /usr/X11R6/lib/libglut.la /usr/X11R6/lib/libglut.so /usr/X11R6/lib/libglut.so.3 /usr/X11R6/lib/libglut.so.3.7.0 and rebuilt glut from the new distrib. It worked fine. So i'd suggest just installing it default then removing it and install your later version.
