Since Suse, Fedora etc. set LC_ALL to POSIX respecitvely nothing for system services (daemons), it is recommendable to extend /etc/init.d/mediatomb at the beginning as the attachment shows, otherwise MediaTomb could run into problems opening files with non-ASCII characters in their names.

Good idea - I also noticed that, however my Fedora system does not have an /etc/sysconfig/language file. Is this script specific to SuSE?

I checked it again and yes, Fedora doesn't use /etc/sysconfig/language. On Fedora I believe it would suffice:

    if [ -f /etc/profile.d/lang.sh ]; then
    . /etc/profile.d/lang.sh
